Sorry to hear. :( It's happened to me in the past, though I *think* I've gotten pretty good at backups thanks to all them unexpected losses. No backups? If you have a decent Internet connection, a service like mega.co.nz works like magic.
Btw, if you can salvage your harddrive you might be able to get those files back. Unless that's the part that died, you can just plug it into another computer and transfer everything right over! If the HD is the problem, there are programs for file recovery too. Hope for the best!
